Give us an overview of your book.
Someone Stop This Merry-Go-Round is a very, deep emotional story of the author’s seventeen years living in an alcoholic family. Soon their security turns to confusion, fear, broken promises and abuse by Richie’s drinking. No matter what Alberta tried to do to keep her family together, it fell in tiny pieces. Richie died 1985 at 45 years of age at the VA Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island.

What inspired you to write this book?
I found so many people suffering with alcohol abuse and families falling apart from it. I wanted to share my life behind closed door with others living in the same dark hole. My desire was to help others see the light of hope; both the alcoholic abuser and family members.

How is your book different from other books in this genre?
This book hides nothing with the emotional and physical abuse. It’s an honest and realistic story with nothing omitted. It’s a rollercoaster of ups and downs with the good and bad. It shows the sober person who turns into a stranger from blackouts.

Are you working on another book? If so when do you expect it to be published?
I’m completing the sequel Please, God, Not Two; This Killer Called Alcoholism. It’s the continuation of our lives after Richie died. The author comes to realize that her daughter, Lori, is taking the same path as her father with alcohol abuse.
Hopefully, the sequel will be out sometime in the Spring of 2010.

If you self published, what advice can you give to fellow writers?
Work hard! Get as many reviews as you can, call newspapers to do a story on you and a write-up each time you have a book signings or special events. Build a trusting relationship with editors and producers. Do the same with local cable TV stations. Get seen and heard. The hardest job is getting your book(s) into bookstores. A traditional publisher usually gets an author’s book(s) into bookstores. Don’t depend on your publisher to get your book known.

If published traditionally, tell us how you benefited:
I wish I had a traditional publisher. I decided on self-publishing because I was already into speaking engagements at rehabs and halfway homes. The requests were starting to come for public speaking. I would still love to get a traditional publisher if the book starts to sell well.

Can you share one of your marketing successes with us?
I get interviewed with local newspapers, local TV stations, review from different countries, Magnificat, A Catholic Woman’s Ministry, libraries, etc. I was told by Steven Harrison, who is a promoter that a poor author depends on getting books in the bookstores and book signing. A rich author sees what else they have to offer with their talents. So, I started a workshop titled “Bring Your Manuscript to Publication.” In other words, get seen and known for more than just your book. I joined five other published authors and started our group called “Authors Without Borders” in May of 2009. We offer different services to bookstores, libraries and schools.

A successful marketing plan is when you see your books are selling in stores, online and your phone is ringing off the hook for speaking engagements. I’m still waiting!

How did you find Allbooks Reviews and what are you hoping for in your relationship with us?
Allbooks Review had been recommended to me by another author in 2006. I feel like family with Allbooks because they have done reviews on my first book A Healing Heart. I wouldn’t think about skipping their services with any book I may get published.

Was the low cost a surprise? What other things would you like Allbooks Reviews to offer writers?
It’s such a relief to see a professional site that offers services at a low price. Authors are struggling trying to get reviews, marketing plans or any other service so we can get our books out there.

Allbooks has many services right now and I can’t think of what’s missing. I would love to purchase more but I’m tied up with purchasing my two books to sell on my own, and working on a third (sequel). Money seems to disappear. Once the last book is completed, I’m going heavy on advertising and marketing.

Step Two: Spying



One of the best ways to research your own marketing plan is to spy on other authors.

Visit as many other authors' websites as you have time for or interest in. What are other

books in your genre doing? What do they look like? What are they selling for? How are

they promoting their books and most important - what can you do to stand out among

them? These are vital questions you will need to answer for the market plan development.

This research will provide you with information on what they are doing to promote their

book, what they are highlighting and how they are attracting visitors to their site.

Knowing what others are doing will help you develop your website and other

promotional materials so that you stand out in a crowd. Visit your library and use the

Internet to obtain the information you need. We also invite you to visit our site

excerpts and information, links and much more are available.

Your favorite search engine can be a useful tool to learn about book marketing, book

promotions and promotional materials. Writers are natural researchers - we have to be!

One of the greatest ways to promote a book is with free publicity. It is not difficult to secure publicity if you know what you are doing. With all that is available on the Internet it’s even easier than ever. The fact is, many times your potential readers will pay attention to free publicity more than they do with paid advertising…especially when it comes to promoting a book.

There are ample opportunities to get publicity if you keep your eyes and ears open. Some authors make a feeble or one-time attempt at gaining publicity and if they don’t immediately get massive coverage they give up. They are under the mistaken notion that either they will never get free publicity by their own efforts. They either give up or they believe they have to hire a PR firm.

I thought I’d fill you in on Robert Fates journey since I reviewed for the first Baby Shark stories. He’s still writing and is as good as ever. PRESS RELEASE WRITING
The purpose of this guide is to outline the steps for writing a press release. Writers that follow this simple formula will be able to write an effective press release in an hour or less.

Step 1 - Choose the Topic of the Press Release

The entire press release writing process starts with "something that happened" that you wish to announce to the media and the public. This is your news and the subject of your press release. News that you can announce includes: a new website, new feature, new product or service, new office location, new employee, new award received, new sales record, new partnership... To get ideas for your own press release, it is a good idea to look at the announcements that others have made in press releases at www.mmdnewswire.com

Step 2 - Write the Headline

The headline is a single sentence statement that announces what the news is. Readers should be able to know exactly what you are announcing by reading the headline. The headline should be 100 characters or less including spaces.

Step 3- Write the Body of the Press Release

The body of the press release expands on the "Who, What, When, Where, How and Why" of the announcement or news. The details in a press release should be limited to the "facts" about the announcement or news. Opinion, fluff or hype is not appropriate. Statements about how the product or service is the most amazing innovation ever invented should not be included. It is important that readers form this opinion by themselves by reading the details (facts) in the press release.

Step 4 - Verify that the Basic Press Release Rules were Followed

- Was your press releases written in third person?
- Does your press release focus on your announcement or news
rather than selling something? Your press release should never resemble an advertisement or sales letter!
- Did you include a media contact name, email address and phone at the bottom of the press release?
- Did you include at least three links to your web site?
- Is there any way that you can make your press release more interesting, timely or unique?
- Is your press release more than 200 words and less than 500?
- Did you add ### to the bottom of the press release to signify the end?
- Is your headline clear and to the point? Can it be shortened without losing anything?
- Are all details of the "Who, What, When, Where, How and Why" covered in the body of the press release?

I am a 45 year old male who is originally from Michigan. Fortune has allowed me to live in and also to travel to quite a few places in my life. Prior to attending college I worked in a new\used bookstore for 10 years buying and selling books, comic books, magazines, memorabilia and collectibles. The store specialized in science fiction and fantasy but we bought and sold every type of printed matter.

From there I attended Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, MI, where a BS\BA in Business Administration and Accounting was conferred. An MBA in Finance and Operations Management from Vanderbilt University was also earned. During the formal educational process courses in Shakespeare, Robert Frost, EE Cummings, Southern American Writers and Creative Writing were also completed.

A variety of employment positions have been held. The most recent jobs were 8 years as Cost Management Manager in the automotive industry for a global Japanese corporation, and 3 ½ years as the Financial Controller for the largest exporter out of the Bahamas while I lived on Grand Cayman Island. But the life of Dilbert took its toll and a decision was made to give up island life, move back to the USA, and start a new career.

When was the book released?

Painless was released in September, 2008.

Give us an overview of your book.

Painless is ostensibly a crime novel. The main protagonist (Augustus “Aug” Valentine) operates an import-export company in South Florida that was started with “illegal” money. Periodic smuggling in and out of the USA occurs. In come a load of rubies, sapphires and diamonds and they are promptly stolen from Aug. Who did what and why is the primary plot of the story.

Painless is also the story of Aug’s conflict of love between his first wife Laurie and his new love Jocelyn. To tell you more here would spoil the fun.

On a societal level Painless is a metaphor for the world of today. The hurricane is a metaphor for the financial hurricane hitting all of us. Also, who are the bigger criminals, the protagonists in Painless or the crooks in Washington and Wall Street\Corporate Management? As one character states “Recidivism is ugly whether personal or social in nature.”

I describe Painless as “modern noir.” What this means is that the elements of “noir” fiction and film are in the novel (crime and society as well as characters who are all conflicted with choices of good and evil) but the style and setting are modern. The time frame is 2005 versus 1950’s Los Angeles or Florida. Virtually every chapter is action packed but the action doesn’t rely on fantasy weapons or fantasy locations.

Lastly, the characters are somewhat common people in criminal situations. The plot is not driven by secret government agencies or lawyers or detectives or “Let’s kill the president\high government official” or “Let’s stop the global terrorist threat.” And when the crimes are resolved the story is about people.

What inspired you to write this book?

Creating novels has been in my mind for many years but until recently I personally never felt mature enough to create a product that would meet my standards. But, as a movie buff, I have seen most of the crime\action\horror films made in recent years and I have found the screenplays to be, in my opinion, “lacking”…and that is being kind. My opinion is that I can create stories that are better than what I see on the big screen today and my belief is that Painless and the other material I am writing achieve that.

The Sergio Leone movie A Fistful of Dynamite has seen a lot of airplay recently as re-release. The story is brilliant. The plot revolves around the desire of Juan to rob a bank but the story is about war and revolution and family and death. The revolutionary with no family destroys the family of the man who wanted no revolution. When James Coburn blows himself up at the end of his life he once again states “Duck, you sucker” but he means not that his friend Juan save his own life because he is going to blow up the dynamite but that his character Duck was a sucker in his life for his belief in Revolution. The story has purpose.
Few recent films I have seen or stories that I have read have such purpose. They are throwaway material designed by the corporate marketing machines who “know best” what humans need. Painless is inspired by this perceived lack of cinematic\literary vision; this homogeneity of art. To steal and paraphrase a line from Videodrome  “Painless has something that most novels don’t have. It has a philosophy and that is what gives it strength.”

How is your book different from other books in this genre?

Most popular material I see published on mass scale today is either fantasy driven or is based upon effects rather than plot and characters. The stories are a capitalization of “what’s hot” and deal with cop, detective, lawyer, secret government agency\agent. In Painless the characters are people you might meet anywhere. The locations all exist and can be visited. The time frame is 2005 so the time is “now.” There is minimum fantasy (dream sequence) and the story is not technology driven. There is also metaphorical purpose to the story while recognizing that popularity is determined by the capability for the mass public to enjoy the novel.

Perhaps there are others that create texts like Painless; I cannot speak to everything written. But when I look at bookshelves I don’t see anything that I would consider to be a modern time frame “noir” title. I don’t see anything like Painless on the bookstore shelves. If one reads the reviews on the Painless website one will see that the people who read Painless really enjoy the novel but there is no reference of “this is like…” This is a testament to the originality of Painless.

Where can people buy your book?

The Borders\Walden’s stores have been very kind to me as an author. The store managers of the 3 major US chains that I have spoken to all love the book but the Borders\Walden’s chain is the only chain to allow me in to the store to do store events and to meet people. The suits at the other chains won’t work with me because I am unknown…even though their stores would love to showcase the product. I appreciate this and promote purchase of Painless through the Borders\Walden’s chain.

Painless is available on Amazon and through all major bookstore chains or internet venues.

Are you working on another book? If so when do you expect it to be published?

I am concurrently writing 2 novels and have 4 more separate novels mapped out beyond those 2. One novel is the Painless sequel titled Blindless. The time frame of Blindless is 2007 and the crime is ratcheted up one level in society.

The second novel is code named “Project NLM.” NLM is loosely based upon the concept of the character of Kwame Kilpatrick who is the defrocked ex-mayor of Detroit. The protagonist of NLM is the mayor of Detroit in 2008 and he is embroiled in scandal. So he does what politicians do when confronted with crisis; he deflects criticism elsewhere. This is done by championing a social cause. The mayor winds up personal vendettas on a road trip from Florida to Detroit but uses the vengeance to promote the social cause through media manipulation. Besides media manipulation the theme of political correctness in today’s society is explored.

My goal is to publish both books simultaneously and I am targeting either a Spring or Summer 2010 release. The biggest issue I have is time to write. I have no dull days!

If you self published, what advice can you give to fellow writers?

From the “meet and greet” events I have hosted the following things pop out to me as advice to aspiring authors:

1)What is your purpose in writing?

My purpose was to create a story translatable to the big screen that has originality and, when one is done with the crimes, the story is about people. So buying the “Rolls-Royce” package of Xlibris made sense for me so that there is full distribution. It also made sense to create a story that appeals to men and women both if I want to sell a lot of copies. So first answer the question of “purpose.”

2)Write a story from start to finish and then go back and re-edit

Many people have said to me “I’ve got half a book done.” Well, then you have nothing. How can you say it is half done if you haven’t finished it? Until you finish the book from start to finish you have no book or no 1\2 book.

Painless went through 6 full revisions. Except for some concepts nothing from revisions 1 & 2 exist in the final text. Revision 1 was a seventy five page prototype from start to finish that I had 30 people read. I found out what worked and what didn’t work from talking to the test market.

3)Be prepared to spend time and money on publishing and marketing.

I had a marketing plan in mind when starting that has continuously evolved. Some items have worked and some have not. But I spent the money to try things and to learn from my mistakes.

The biggest item is that I am not relying on others more than is necessary to sell my product. I designed my cover; I am seeking my reviews; I am lining up my book signings; I am spending my time and money on promoting Painless. It is a full time job, especially when combined with writing future products. It will be years before I make any, if any, financial gain off the novel(s). Are you willing to make that commitment?

Remember, you get what you pay for. If you want to buy cheap and save a couple hundred dollars on publishing your product you can do that; just don’t be surprised if you get a bad web site or a bad cover or have distribution issues because you went cheap. I went with Xlibris and I am happy I did.

Can you share one of your marketing successes with us?

One of my successes is designing a cover that looks like a movie poster and allows me to have a 30 second speech that utilizes the cover to sell the book.

The Ruby symbolizes the South Florida action.
The Platinum Ingots symbolize Jocelyn selling Jaguars in Merritt Island and the scenes in Cocoa\Cocoa Beach.
The Sapphire symbolizes Aug & Jocelyn’s weekend getaway in Ponte Vedra.
The Diamond symbolizes the real estate developments in San Destin.
Aug’s life is a hurricane that is heading to San Destin.
His life is a gambling roll of the dice; is it Snake Eyes or a 7…and which is the better roll?
The gold I in the title symbolizes the gold.
The background and lightning symbolize the storm that surrounds the characters.
Painless means multiple things including “Pane Less” symbolized by the shattered glass motif of the logo.
There are rubies, diamonds and sapphires but the emeralds, the symbol of trust in “astro-gemology”, are saved for Jocelyn’s ring. See the “Emerald J”? There is also a “Gold A” entwined for Aug. This is their Ring of Love.

A picture is worth 1,000 words and I have a picture that I can point to when talking to both bookstores and customers. There is immediate visualization about the product that is achieved through this process.

How did you find Allbooks Reviews and what are you hoping for in your relationship with us?

To market a book one needs reviews and I found Allbooks Reviews researching websites for reviews. My only expectation was that Painless would be reviewed in an objective manner. I have confidence in the product as the people who give Painless a try really enjoy the novel because it is not only a good read but also because it is unique.

I believe that the Allbooks review bears this out. The review states that the book is good for “a light, fun read for a day at the beach” but also that it has “a complicated and intriguing plot” and “plenty of humor” full of “action and quirky humor.” This sounds exactly like a 1950’s noir story except that the time is now.

Was the low cost a surprise? What other things would you like Allbooks Reviews to offer writers?

I have no complaints about the cost and I feel that, in today’s world, the cost is exceptionally fair. Allbooks is certainly not getting rich off of me!

I cannot state what else Allbooks should do for authors because I am too new at this business to really know. Between my personal life, promoting Painless and writing the next 2 novels, I really have no needs that I am aware of other than the review and advertising.

Given how "easy" I am about sending someone a review copy, have I likely been scammed out of a free book now and then? No question. But, to send out a review copy costs me less than $5 (including book, mailer, postage and press kit) for the very best form of advertising I could possibly use: the book itself. If I get even one actual bookstore/Amazon sale as a result, it's paid for itself twice over. If that sale is off my site, now we're up to a three-fold payback. Plus, another book is out there in someone's hands, with all that word-of-mouth potential.

And take it a step further. Even when someone hasn't asked for a book, think about why sending one might be a smart idea. A few months back, I threw an audaciously self-serving offer out in my monthly newsletter. Want some cards to spread the word on my work (for your friends, writers groups, etc.)? And had a few takers. Including a guy who ran a large writers group out west, who asked me if I'd like to be a presenter at their spring conference, all expenses paid.

The greeting card market isn't just Hallmark, and it doesn't even stop with just greeting cards. This market is more appropriately labeled as the "slogan market" or "catchphrase market," because that's what it's all about--creating concise statements for money. Here are 5 such markets:

Brilliant Enterprises has been around since 1967. They pay $60 for "complete, ready-to-print word and picture design." Printing mainly postcards, this publisher says, "Messages should be of a highly original nature, emphasizing subtlety, simplicity, insight, wit, profundity, beauty, and felicity of expression. Messages should be of universal appeal, capable of being appreciated by all types of people and being easily translated into other languages."

Duck and Cover Productions bought 120 ideas/samples last year. They pay $40 per idea, though none are contained in a greeting card. Duck and Cover specializes in buttons, magnets, and stickers only. The editor says, "Duck and Cover holds the trump card for intelligent, contemporary humor. We are a smorgasbord of existential angst, psychotic babble, dry wit and outrageous zingers."

Ephemera, Inc., pays $50 per slogan. Slogans are then used on novelty buttons, magnets, and stickers. The editors say, "Ephemera has a reputation for coming up with the most irreverent, provocative, and outrageously funny material on the market. We encourage you to be as weird, twisted, or rude as you like. We want humor that makes us laugh out loud."

Kate Harper Designs has been doing business since 1993. Freelancers write 100% of their material. The editors say, "We buy work from professional freelance writers, young 20-something writers, and children writers. Our subjects are mostly humor." They want unrhymed verse ideas only.

Koehler Companies, Inc., specializes in a line of decorative plaques. They bought 25 ideas/samples last year, and pay $125 per selected verse. In addition, they limit the use of the verse to allow writers the ability to resell their work for other uses. The editors say, "We combine art and message to create a product that a consumer will like enough to want to
look at for a year or longer."

ANYONE INTERESTED IN POETRY?

Poetry is for real writing enthusiasts. For one, you realize very quickly that poets do not make big money off their poetry. And on top of that, it's nearly unheard of for a living poet to reach any sort of a mass-market audience. Bottom line— even the most respected poets of today go unnoticed by most people.

So, yes, poets are very dedicated and realize that writing is more than just a paycheck or fame. It's about the art and craft of creating beautiful language. Check out three book publishers who accept poetry:

Call for Submissions:
John Daniel and Co. pays 10% royalty on wholesale price. Established in 1980, they publish only the very best poetry they come across. When submitting a poetry collection, the editors advise sending 12-15 sample poems and SASE. Recent titles include Jonah and Job, by Judson Jerome, and The Balancing Pole, by Ann L. McLaughlin.

Oolichan Books hails from Canada and was established in 1974. They pay royalty on retail price, and "are one of the few small literary presses in Canada that still publishes poetry. We try to include 2 or 3 poetry titles each year. We try to balance our list between emerging and
established poets." Recent titles include Love Songs for a Tender God, by Hiro Boga, and Riverbook & Ocean, by W.H. New.

Red Hen Press was established in 1993. 90% of their books are from unagented writers. Books of poetry should be at least 60 pages, and submissions can be single or double-spaced. Poets should submit their poetry for the publisher-sponsored Benjamin Saltman Poetry Award. The editors say, "Our audience reads poetry, literary fiction, and intelligent nonfiction. If you have an agent, we may be too small since we don't pay advances. Be willing to promote your own book."

I was born on July 15th 1979 and raised in Melbourne, Australia. I have completed degrees in Behavioural Science and Professional Writing and Speech, with majors in English and Psychology. I am currently completing a doctoral degree. So far, I have published three books: Origin: Poems from the crack of dawn (2006), Hermetica: Myths, Legends, Poems (2007) and Fifty Confessions (2009). In 2008, Hermetica picked up three literary awards. I have an avid interest in history, mythology and the occult, but I also like to keep my academic interests balanced with forms of physical exercise like lifting weights, diving and thrill seeking. I am a man of adventure and love to expand my knowledge of other people and cultures by travelling. I have travelled extensively in Europe, Africa, America and Australia. Last year, I became a member of the Rosicrucian Order Ancient Mystical Order Rosae Crucis (AMORC), a humanitarian movement making for better health, happiness and peace in people’s earthly lives. I think it was the best decision I ever made!

When was the book released?

The book was released in March, 2009.

Give us an overview of your book.

Fifty Confessions is a collection of free-verse poetry exploring a metaphorical descent into the psyche of an author riddled by a mystery ailment. It begins and ends with a small prayer dedicated to the one in whom we all trust, live and have our being. The author’s note then expounds necessary background information including a short synopsis of his personal history through which the audience is better able to grasp the nature and context for the poetry. This is followed by a circle of over fifty confessions grouped into six sections pertaining to the psychosocial model of stress response, beginning with the illness’s onset and culminating in acceptance and closure.

What inspired you to write this book?

I was inspired to write this book after an illness I went through midway through last year (2008). It all happened very rapidly. I had completed a draft of it within a month’s time.

How is your book different from other books in this genre?

It’s different from other books of poetry in that it acts a confessional, revealing bits of my own personality and nature. Sometimes the confessions are blunt and directly, and other times they seep their way into consciousness via the avenues of mythology and folklore.

Are you working on another book? If so when do you expect it to be published?

Yes I am! I am currently working on a travel memoir/autobiography titled Shades of Aphrodite. It focuses on my many travels around Greece and explicates some of the lesser known folklore as well as some revelations of my own about the ancient landscape. It should be out by early 2010. I also have a few fictional works lined up after that, including a retelling of the Egyptian myth of Isis and Osiris and something really interesting and unique involving Plato’s legend of Atlantis.

If you self published, what advice can you give to fellow writers?

Do your research! Make sure your manuscript is the best it can be and free of any errors before you send it in. Only the best will do. The internet is such a valuable resource when it comes to reviews, author blogs, editing, self-publishing and online marketing. After publication, you can host events, seminars or workshops that pertain to your book content and do giveaways! There are many great online marketing resources and suggestions if you go to authorsandexperts.com, authorsden.com, or prleads.com.

I have had some success with advertising in Parabola magazine, a publication centred on folklore and mythology. I think you’re bound to have more success with marketing if the publication you’re advertising in targets an audience that reads the type of material that you write about.

I found the site by chance actually. I typed in a few keywords into Google whilst looking for possible book reviews and this site came up. By appearing here, I am hoping to gain some added exposure for my books. Every little bit counts!

The low cost was a surprise actually, especially if you compare it with some of the other reviewers like Kirkus Discoveries which charge an arm and a leg to have a book reviewed. 2009 Canadian Authors Festival

The first-ever Canadian Authors Festival runs from October 16 through 18 in Ottawa, Canada from 9am to 5pm daily at the Canadian Aviation Museum (located at the Ottawa/Rockliffe Airport). This event coincides with the museum’s 100th Anniversary of Flight celebration!

WARNING ABOUT JV PARTNER PROGRAM FROM ONE OF OUR AUTHORS

Dear Shirley,

I promised you to tell about the JV partner program. I was introduced to the program by e-mail. The advertisement was saying if I register for the class with cost of $2500 and follow every thing they teach. My book will be best seller on Amazon or Barns and nobles even if for a day. I registered, since there was a guarantee that if it did not work they will pay my money back. The class was on line and took several months. The problem was that I was suppose to find the JV partner myself and the refund would be possible if I could have at least 500,000 e-mail. This process which I sent the e-mail to people who had web with lots of opt-in’s took me a year since I did not find many who wanted to cooperate.

Finally, I did the campaign, the result was zero. Not even one book was sold. There was a form on the letter which only one person tried to fill with junk that was all. I had 12 partner to send the e-mail to more than 500.000 people. I do not know what went wrong. Either the partner did not send any e-mail or people have seen so many letters like it that they did not bother looking at it. After sending my results they refunded the money of course. They claim that I did not do it the way I should. But to me it is not worth it specially for the fiction books. Also those who were successful did it long time ago and may be the concept was new and it worked for them. I hope this will help.

Of course if you have so many friends who like to partner with you, you can create a page yourself and send it out and see if it works or not. If you can effort the time and you do not pay any money it does not hurt to try.

Tell us about yourself:

I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Alabama in 1993 with a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Humanities/Social Sciences. I won an award for “Outstanding Senior Project” upon graduation for my coursework that was done in conjunction with my on-site study at the Institute of Holy Land Studies in Jerusalem.

As a Certified Court Reporter, I have made contributions to the scholarly journal published by the National Court Reporters Association. I have spent the last ten years providing real-time broadcast captioning for television for the hearing-impaired. Combined with my Biblical studies, I believe it gives me a unique perspective to write from a Christian worldview.

My first book, The Donkey and the King, had a second printing last year, and is a beautifully illustrated children’s book published by VBW Publishing.

I am intimately familiar with adoption, having also been adopted as a child, which helped me to present the spirit of adoption in Children of Dreams.

Give us an overview of your book.

Children of Dreams is an inspiring story of turning stolen dreams into life-changing hope, not only for me, but for two destitute children. Both a story of triumph and a story of insecurity and fear, Children of Dreams will touch the heart of every reader. This is more than an adoption story. Set in the remotest regions of the planet, I faced insurmountable odds – communist blockades, life-threatening illness, betrayal and deceit . Hopefully my courage and determination will provoke readers to ask some of life’s deepest questions. Despair transformed into heavenly joy may inspire even the most skeptical to believe in miracles.

Children of Dreams is my riveting, first-person account that will resonate with all those who have, know, or love children.

What inspired you to write this book?

This question is answered in the first paragraph of the introduction to Children of Dreams.

“What does it mean to be adopted? As I look at my two beautiful, internationally adopted daughters, the definition becomes living and full of personal meaning, not just a two-dimensional word on a written page. Maybe what I want is not so much a definition as an understanding of the depths of its meaning on a spiritual level—t­­­he act itself of love, sacrifice, cost, and inheritance.”

How is your book different from other books in this genre?

The title of my book, “Children of Dreams,” falls into the most recognizable category of adoption. However, most adoption books give detailed information on how to adopt. I do not give any advice or information in that regard.

Children of Dreams is a story borne out of sadness and loss. I experienced a difficult childhood after being left on the streets by my father, and later my husband left me after I put him through medical school. Two weeks after my divorce was final, my husband’s girlfriend gave birth to his child.

How could God bring anything good out of all of that? How could God heal my broken heart? Children of Dreams is a true story of how God redeems dreams and makes them better than anything we could have imagined. It’s a story of redemption in my life as well as how God chose me to be the mother of my two beautiful daughters.

My faith hopefully will inspire others to pursue their dreams even if they feel like so much has been lost. God never wastes anything and can use everything to bring Him glory.

Are you working on another book? If so when do you expect it to be published?

Right now I am not working on another book. I am blogging and writing articles and praying that God will show me what He would like me to write next. I have many ideas. After twenty years of court reporting, I would love to write the greatest court scene that will ever happen in the future. Maybe that will get someone’s imagination going.

If you self published, what advice can you give to fellow writers?

I’m not sure where POD fits into the scheme of publishing, whether it is considered self‑publishing or not. In the beginning I was completely set on having a traditional publisher publish my book. But when I went to the Florida Christian Writer’s Conference in March, nobody was interested in my book. I kept hearing from book editors, “no personal stories, no memoirs.”

I had worked very hard to prepare my book. I had many people to read it and give me feedback. I had spent months editing with many rewrites based on feedback I had received. I knew I had a good book. I was shocked there was so little interest. I don’t think I had anyone at the conference to read the first word simply because it was a personal story and the Christian publishing world is not publishing that kind of book right now.

When I came home, I started looking at secular publishing companies and found that is not the case in the secular world. Personal experience stories are sought after and being published. I started doing research to find anyone that might be interested in my type of book.

Have you ever had one of those moments where a light suddenly goes on in your head and you think what am I doing? Do I really want to spend two years jumping through all the hoops to go with a secular publishing company? I am 53 years old, I knew my book was a good read, and it was finished. I also knew VBW Publishing would publish it and do a good job. For a couple of thousand dollars, I could have my book in the marketplace within two months.

It was a no‑brainer at that point. VBW Publishing had previously published a children’s picture book I had written a few years ago, The Donkey and the King, and had done a wonderful job. Part of it I think was pride. I wanted to be able to say I was published by a main line publisher.

I feel like I made the best choice I could have made considering my situation. I am not a well‑known speaker, I do not have a platform, I am not a celebrity, and I do not have a Ph.D. or other impressive initials after my name. No matter how well written a book is, without these additional qualifications, it is an uphill climb to go with a traditional publisher.

The good news is, you don’t have to. There are so many more options today for writers to get their work published, and with the Internet and other avenues through which to market, it’s not necessary. Prices continue to drop and make it a viable option for those of us who aren’t wealthy, and the quality of the books, at least with VBW Publishing, is on par with any mainline publisher. It is an exciting time to be a writer and author.

Can you share one of your marketing successes with us?

I have four videos that I put on Youtube and found it to be an inexpensive way to share my adoption story. Online videos now make up 52% of traffic on the Internet. Youtube visitors spend 27 minutes a day watching videos. In the future I see it becoming an even more important way to reach potential buyers. As the old saying goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Maybe videos are worth two thousand words.

How did you find Allbooks Reviews and what are you hoping for in your relationship with us?

I found Allbooks Reviews through best‑selling author Debra Welch, who recommended the website to me. Networking is very important as a writer. I have been fortunate that some authors have taken the time to share their knowledge and help me along the way.

Was the low cost a surprise? What other things would you like Allbooks Reviews to offer writers?

I was very impressed with the Allbooks Review that I received and the thoroughness and perceptiveness of the reviewer, which is helpful for people who haven’t read my book to know whether it’s a book they would want to read. I found Allbooks Reviews to be very approachable for all authors, whether published by a traditional publisher, POD, or self‑published. Allbooks Reviews is an excellent resource, especially for new authors, to get their book noticed in the marketplace and receive low‑cost publicity. Without publicity, no matter how good a book is, people won’t know about it to buy it.

And yes, the low cost was a surprise. Marketing is very expensive and since I don’t have a lot of extra money, I was glad to find a way to market my book professionally as well as very economically.

INTERNAL MARKERS

FROM FUNDAMENTALS OF FICTION WRITING--Valerie Parv,

Every story is about conflict, such as whether or not a father can reconcile with his estranged son. Each character may have an external marker that identifies the essence of his attitude: The father may be an ex-military man who every morning makes his bed so precisely that he literally bounces a quarter off it. If the quarter doesn't bounce high enough, he may pull the bed apart and start over. This indicates that he's a rigid man who needs discipline, almost compulsively so. The son takes photos as a hobby, but all the people in them are photographed so that their heads are cut off. This indicates he feels removed from people as individuals, probably as a result of his father's emotional distance. Now, combine these external markers with the internal markers and you have a fully developed character who the reader cares deeply about.

Internal markers are about desire: What does the character want? Why does she or he want it? This is revealed in the characters' emotional reactions to events and other characters in the story, their motivation for their actions in the story, and their biases or opinions about the world at large. In the above case, the internal markers are how badly each wants to reconcile, why they do or don't want to reconcile, and what they're willing to do to cause or prevent the reconciliation.

Sometimes this internal landscape of a character is presented in a dialogue, in which the character tells us what he wants and why. Or we may get that info in a flashback, during whichwe see certain events and the emotional impact they had on the character.

Another method of providing internal markers is through the character's opinions about various subjects. These opinions could be related to the events of the story, or they may not. She may be giving opinions about movies, books, or music. Or pontificating on politics or religion. It is through the pattern of these opinions that the reader comes to know what they are feeling--and who they really are.

I am a Mom of two great boys age 7 and 4. I have always dreamed of writing and wrote my first book (never published though) when I was 12. I grew up in Sweden and moved to the US 1994. I live a typical suburb life right outside of Manhattan and love it here.

Give us an overview of your book.

JayJay and Totte are two Swedish-Haitian-American brothers who live right outside of New York City together with their Swedish mom and Haitian dad. They speak English, Swedish and Kreyol. Their skin is just that perfect suntanned color all year around and they have nice curly hair and brown eyes.

In the book 'My unique family!' Jay Jay feels like people are staring at him, especially when he speaks Swedish with his mom. One day he asks his mom why people are staring at him. Why he is different.

What do you think his mom answers?

In 'My unique family' you will follow the interesting question and see how Jay Jay's mom answers the question. Through her answer you will meet 18 other mixed families from around the world. You will learn facts about their countries, learn to say the sentences 'My name is ... What is your name?' in over 100 languages.

What inspired you to write this book?

I wanted to make a difference in the lives of children. This book does that. It boosts the self-esteem of mixed kids and held mono-cultural kids understand the greatness in their mixed friends.

How is your book different from other books in this genre?

It is inspiring in a way that no other book is. It nails the issues of a mixed child and makes those issues an asset. It is a great educational tool for families and schools.

Are you working on another book? If so when do you expect it to be published?
Yes I do. I am right now working on getting ‘My unique family’ translated to Spanish (it is already published in Swedish) and then my next book in the Jay Jay and Totte series will be put on paper. It is called ‘What are you anyway?’

If you self published, what advice can you give to fellow writers?

I am self published in the US. Educate yourself and understand that it is a lot of work to become successful. Network, network, network

If published traditionally, tell us how you benefited:
My books in Sweden are traditionally published. I must say that I like self publishing better. You are in charge, have more control and make more money.

Can you share one of your marketing successes with us?

I have worked hard to market this book in the US. I started by getting in contact with local books and toy stores. I offered story hours, work shops and book signings. I was sure about the greatness of my book and I believe in my book. My husband had to start taking days of from work so I could fulfill all the events I had scheduled. It is going great and I get big orders coming in on the book.

It was great to get professional reviews from you and I hope to work with you on my next books as well.

WHY NEWS RELEASES FAIL by Paul J. Krupin
The issues listed here have all been identified as reasons for the failure of a news release. This is based on over 20 years of experience in dealing with the aftermath ¬- the actual number and quality of responses generated from the transmittal of a news release

So here are the most common reasons why news releases fail:

1. You wrote an advertisement. It’s not a news release at all. It sells product. It fails to offer solid news of real tangible interest, value-added information, education or entertainment.

2. You wrote for a minority, not for a majority of people in the audience. You simply won’t compete with other news releases that clearly are written for a larger demographic of the media audience.

3. You are the center of attention, not the media audience. You focus on your business and your marketing, instead of things the editor and his or her audience will be interested in.

4. You forgot to put the five W’s up front. (WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN and WHY THE AUDIENCE WILL BE INTERESTED). You didn’t clearly and succinctly tell the media why the audience would be interested in this.

5. You are too wordy and text dense. You focused on details and minutia, instead of the most important ideas, issues, factors, facts, and news angles. You fail to address the real significant impacts your story has on people.

6. You place too much information on one page. The one page news release has a font size so small an editor needs a magnifying glass to read it.

7. You included corporate logos and other non-persuasive low value added graphics that distract the editor from your key message. You may have also used an unusual fancy font or a file format that turns to gobbledygook when it goes through a fax machine.

8. You wrote a personally biased article for the media to publish, instead of pitching the idea to the media and the objective reasons why the media audience will be interested.

9. You wrote about features and facts, and forgot to explain what it means to real people. Tell a story about real people. Add in real life human interest.

10. You wrote about how your news ties in to someone else’s fame and glory. Forget it. Never stand in the shadow of someone else. Make your own light. Tell your own story.

11. Your news release responds to something that just happened. You’re too late. You’re behind the eight ball. Forget it. Get out in front of the news.

12. You included too much hype, self-laudatory praise, pithy quotes, useless testimonials, jargon or gobbledygook. Get rid of it.

13. You may have also identified prior media coverage, which indicates it’s no longer a new issue. Get rid of it. Let each news release stand on it’s own two feet.

14. You tried to impress and be clever or innovative but you come off naïve, less than expert, biased, flippant, arrogant, or crazy. Tone it down. Get straight.

15. You made vague and unsubstantiated claims, or wild and outrageous claims, or you included a statement that simply rubs the media the wrong way. Get rid of them.

16. You are trying to be different, just for the sake of it, but you come off eccentric. Forget it. Don’t create a false or inflated image. Be yourself.

17. You wrote a rant and rave worthy of a letter to the editor, instead of a problem solving tips article, worthy of a feature story. Decide what you want, put your best effort into it.

18. You are simply not credible. It could be your ideas are simply not well thought out, or that you’ve offered old well-worn material, or that you are too extreme or controversial, or not qualified. You may not be expert enough, or sufficiently qualified, to make the statements, compared to others in your field. You need to present information that qualifies you properly and adequately.

19. You provided poor contact information. You need to identify the best single point of contact and the correct phone number so interested media can reach you and get the best possible attention and response from you to meet their needs. One key person, one phone, no fax, one email address, and one URL (with no long string addresses).

20. You did not include a clear media call for action. You didn’t tell the media what you want them to do with your news release. You need to tell them what you are asking for or suggesting or offering. Then you need to offer the media incentives value-added reasons to do so, like free review copies, free test samples, interview questions and answers, media kits with story angles and stats and data, relevant photographs, etc.

21. You did not incorporate and integrate a primary response mechanism. You need to include a value-added reason, which motivates the editor to publish or mention your contact information, which will generate calls, traffic, interviews, or requests for more information. This usually means something unique and of special value to the audience, that the editor feels good about mentioning. Use an offer for a free problem solving report.

22. You sent the release to the wrong media. Target the media that your clients read, watch and listen to when they are in the right mood, that is, receptive to hearing about your news, and willing to take action when they get your message. Work with your publicist to target the right media.

23. You rely on a single fax or an email to produce an avalanche of media calls. You conduct no follow up. Get real. Follow up properly and you can triple or quadruple your media response rate. Better still, you can ask the editors “what can I give you to support a feature story and meet your needs.”

Finally, the biggest reason for news release failure is one of attitude. How do you define success or failure? It’s called unrealistic expectations.

So when you write a news release please review it against these criteria to see if you’ve made any of these errors. Then fix each and every one of them yourself.

Listen to your publicist. Heed these warnings and reduce the risks of failure. Fail to pay attention to these issues, and proceed at your own risk.

For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in the world of science and scientific discovery. After getting established in a career in aviation, I went back to college at age 31 and received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California at Davis, CA. I became a government employee and have spent most of my career as an instructor at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City where I developed and revised courses and manuals used in teaching weather and other aviation-related fields. Since retiring, my wife, Mary Jo, and I have moved to a smaller town to be near family and enjoy a slower pace of life.

Give us an overview of your book.

The book explains the origins of what we refer to as “Human Nature.” Despite the tremendous variation in human behavior, there are several distinct traits that are common to our species and all other species as well. These include dominance and submission, aggression, territoriality, altruism, loyalty to family and group, mistrust of strangers and sex drive along with all of our automatic bodily functions such as heartbeat and respiration. We refer to all these functions together as the “Instinct of Survival” and they originate in a small and very ancient part of our brain often called the “Primitive Brain Stem.”

My purpose in the book is to show that there are normal and natural reasons for what are often illogical, unreasonable and destructive emotions that result in war, hatred, violence, bigotry and other negative behaviors. The alternatives of peace, cooperation, reason and tolerance are simply decisions we can all make.

What inspired you to write this book?

As a young man, I was quite domineering and controlling with my family even though I disliked seeing that type of behavior in others. When I finally recognized it in myself, I was determined to change, even though it was difficult to do. I also began a serious program of research and observation to explain this and other facets of “Human Nature.” It finally all made sense and, when I retired, I felt that I could sum it all up in a book.

How is your book different from other books in this genre?
Other books that I have read describe instinctive behavior in all species except humans.

So far, book signings at Hasting Bookstores have resulted in the most sales.

How did you find Allbooks Reviews and what are you hoping for in your relationship with us?
My stepdaughter, Lori Davis, who is also publishing a book, told me about Allbooks. I’m hoping for widespread promotion of her book and mine.

Was the low cost a surprise? What other things would you like Allbooks Reviews to offer writers?
I was pleasantly surprised at the variety and low cost of the services provided by Allbooks Reviews. I don’t know what else they could offer except possibly a personal recommendation from Oprah!
